Behind the Shot

The Maldives are a chain of 26 atolls that stretch across a territory that spans approximately 115 square miles about 430 miles from the mainland of India. Tourism is an important industry in the Maldives. Considered one of the world’s best destinations for diving, only 1% of the country is land, spread over 1,192 tiny islands and atolls. The Maldives are known for their coral reefs, clear warm waters, abundant marine life and bright white-sand beaches. There are 26 named atolls in the Maldives, each with its own unique dive sites and features.

A particularly common species in the Maldives, the convict surgeonfish, also known as the convict tang or fiveband surgeonfish, is easily identified by its five vertical stripes. Corey was taken by their gentle nature: “The Maldives are packed with sea life. The lagoons and areas around the islands are just packed with fish. These were everywhere, and they are just the most beautiful. The light hits them and they just glow underwater. I am so happy with how this shot came out. It’s very relaxing to me, and captures just how clear the water was there.”
