Richard has always been attracted to the local Southern California piers. “I’m fascinated by the swell, the tide, the light and the water constantly changing. The piers don’t change over time, though.” Just after sunset on this winter evening, Richard experimented with long exposures of the waves breaking below the Manhattan Beach pier.
“There was a pretty big swell. With the movement in the water you can get some really great abstract looks. The purple comes from the darkness mixed with the lights from the pier after sundown, creating some really interesting colors. I’m drawn to the abstract randomness of it. Every wave is different and there’s a lot of movement.”
