Behind the Shot

The Seychelles is the perfect place to visit if you want to get away from everything. The tiny country comprising 115 islands sits about 500 miles off the coast of East Africa, and about 500 miles north of the northern tip of Madagascar. Seychelles’ diverse history is expressed through an eclectic mix of cultures. African, Indian, Asian, French and British influences —from architecture to cuisine—make the Seychelles a place like no other.

Merr visited Anse Source d'Argent on the island of La Digue, home to pink sand beaches, lush rain forests and gigantic eroded boulders strewn along the otherwise smooth shoreline. “I’d never seen anything so unique before. A tropical setting, with these unique rocks La Digue is known for. Being here truly makes me feel like I’m in another world.”

In planning her August visit, Merr knew that the beaches would become very busy with tourists. “Generally I choose to shoot around sunrise, as early in the morning if possible, so that I have the location to myself when the light is at its most beautiful.”
