Behind the Shot
Taken in Indonesia in the summer of 2021, this shot by photographer Connor Trimble captured a whale shark swimming in the “abyss.” Every new moon, the whale sharks come up from their abyss to feed and will even swim right up to people. They are massive animals, the size of a school bus, but “they are gentle giants,” says Trimble. He shot the whale shark from straight above and wanted to capture the feeling of being insignificant next to the majestic animal.
Trimble “loves the feeling of being a small person in a big place,” so he chose to edit this shot in black and white to focus on the vastness of the ocean and show the beautiful whale shark in all its glory.
