Behind the Shot

Riomaggiore is the farthest south of the Cinque Terre (Five Lands) in the province of La Spezia, Liguria, in northern Italy. Riomaggiore and four other nearby villages, the surrounding coastline and hillsides make up Cinque Terre National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Dating back to the early 13th century, Riomaggiore is best known for its vineyards. Tower houses are stacked on top of stepped terraces, with busy restaurants, bars and shops lining the narrow alleylike streets and walkways. Like the other towns of Cinque Terre, Riomaggiore overlooks the Ligurian Sea. Today, tourism is the main industry of the region, although traditional industries remain, including fishing and winemaking.

Kyle had a very special reason for visiting Cinque Terre and Riomaggiore. “I took my mom here on a surprise trip for her birthday. She was really looking forward to visiting the region, and I was really looking forward to photographing the colorful coastline here with the textures and graphic colors.”
