Behind the Shot
Iceland has experienced a tourism explosion over the last 12 years. In 2019, tourists outnumbered residents more than 6.5 to 1.
One of the most popular tourist attractions is the Skógafoss waterfall on the Skógá River, 96 miles south of Reykjavik by way of the main highway. This very famous waterfall was seen in Thor: The Dark World. The character Floki “discovers” Skógafoss in season 5 of Vikings, and a memorable kiss between Jon Snow and Deanerys Targaryen took place here in season 8 of Game of Thrones.
But Alex wants you to know that sometimes the better locations are next to the popular locations. On the other side of the parking lot, just pass the Skogar Museum, a nondescript path marks the way to the less-known Kvernufoss falls.
Alex shares his favorite spot in all of Iceland here. “There’s an easy path back to the waterfall. I’ve never seen more than five or six people here. You can walk behind the waterfall. You’re inside this cave behind the waterfall. It’s so incredible. This is my happy spot. I can go here and just recenter and put things into perspective. The cave is about 60 feet deep from the back of the waterfall to the back face of the cave.”
