Behind the Shot
Tucked away in Lassen Volcanic National Park, the Painted Dunes are a masterpiece of nature. Rolling hills of oxidized volcanic ash ripple across the landscape in bold shades of red, orange, and black, broken up by deep green pine trees that stand defiantly against the elements. It’s a place that looks more like an artist’s canvas than a natural formation.
Kyle Huber captured this incredible view from above, showcasing the way the colors swirl and shift with the light. Shooting in the late afternoon gave the landscape an even richer, more dramatic feel—bringing out the surreal beauty of this volcanic terrain.
A perfect reminder that some of Earth’s best art takes thousands of years to create.
