Behind the Shot
One of photographer Meagan Puett’s favorite summer activities is camping and exploring the Wild West, resulting in the stunning shots on display in her portfolio. As she adventured in southern Utah in 2022, she discovered an astonishing, otherworldly landscape—as if she had landed on Mars.
Utah’s Bentonite Hills are a geological wonder and a natural masterpiece, created from layers of colorful sediments. These variegated hills are one of the most dramatic and unique landscapes in the United States.
Finding an attractive perspective for a shot is a fundamental goal for photographers. When Meagan first flew her drone over this topography, she was overwhelmed by the intricate patterns and textures that unfolded—the rich reds and deep oranges contrasted with the dark purples and lavenders. Depending on the time of day, the red and orange hues of these hills really pop, or they become grey and even blue—as if transported from an alien planet.
“This place was unreal,” Meagan says. “It reminds me that sometimes the places that are overlooked or underappreciated offer the most beauty.”
