Behind the Shot
Somewhere along the Westfjords peninsula of Iceland, photographer Nick Bondarev was leading an expedition of travelers through what he considers “real Iceland”—far from the typical tourist traps. He looked up and saw this farmhouse, miniature in contrast to its natural surroundings.
“This is still one of my favorite pictures,” he shares. “I feel grounded when I see this image.”
Iceland’s fjords—remote and less traveled—boast the country’s most rugged wonders and historical places. The awe-inspiring Westfjords region rewards visitors with untouched landscapes, towering mountains and charming settlements just begging to be explored.
“It reminds me of the wild world around us compared to the tiny spot that we call home and feel safe in,” says Nick, who is passionate about introducing adventurers to Icelandic culture and showing them unforgettable scenes. “For me, this image represents that feeling of ‘home.’”
The Westfjords are certainly a must-see for any serious explorer—whether you join Nick on an Icelandic expedition or simply commemorate the island’s striking terrain by hanging this piece of fine-art photography in your favorite room.
