Behind the Shot
Very few cars have been in continuous production for 50 years. The Porsche 911 is one of them. Its distinctive shape has changed very little in the last 50 years, which makes the 911 an icon. The model is still going strong–22 different versions are currently on the road.
Photographer Quentin Pradal took this shot in May 2021 in Beverly Hills, California. “It may sound silly, but my brother and I used to play Need for Speed growing up and the 911 was my favorite pick for racing. Beverly Hills abounds with sports cars, but all I cared about was this one. It reminded me of my childhood in a way. It is such a beautiful, legendary car.”
For this shot, Quentin primarily used negative space to give just enough clues about the model of the car. The emblem and the familiar rounded headlight help viewers recognize the car without seeing its entirety. “To me,” says Quentin, “photography isn’t necessarily about the things you see; it’s as much about the things you don’t see.”
