Circus Lane

Behind the Shot

As her Scottish road trip was coming to an end, photographer Henrike Schenk was staying in Edinburgh and wanted to capture the historic beauty of the city. “I wanted a street view picture to finish this series. After an online search I thought that Circus Lane would be the perfect spot for it,” she says.

Circus Lane is a cobbled street in Edinburgh. The residential street with flower-bedecked mews houses is within walking distance from the city heart of Edinburgh. At the end of the lane is the 1828 St. Stephen’s Church, designed by William Henry Playfair. This church is the crown jewel of the street and caught Schenk’s eye, inspiring her to take this shot.

“This small, charming lane is thought by some to be the most beautiful street in the whole U.K., and I can’t disagree,” Schenk says. “When I walked it, I fell in love with it immediately. Even though this is a short lane, I’m happy I didn’t skip it.”
