Behind the Shot

According to a 2019 article in Bassmaster magazine, Michigan is one of the best states in the U.S. for bass fishing. In fact, Michigan is home to six of the top 10 bass fishing lakes in the country. Taylor visited the Siebert Nature Preserve on Susan Lake, just north of Lake Charlevoix, in Harbor Springs, Michigan, for a day of bass fishing with his good friend Matt.

“Matt is a master fisherman,” Taylor explained. “He invited me to join him, and even though I hate fishing, I decided to go and make the best of it.” Bass like to gather near the shore and hide in rock piles and among brush and water vegetation. In particular, bass are attracted to hydrilla, hyacinth and other greenery such as lily pads, which provide food, shade and high levels of oxygen. “We kayaked into the lily pads in search of the bass hiding there, but despite Matt’s guidance, I caught absolutely nothing.

“I ended up getting out of the kayak and making the most of the day on dry land. I sent my drone up and was shooting from the shore, and literally seconds after I took this shot, Matt caught a 7-pounder. Along with another half dozen or so he caught that day, he did more than enough fishing for the two of us.

“I just love the contrast between the lily pads and the water in this lake, but I really, really hate fishing.”
