Behind the Shot
“A 4 a.m. wake-up for a hike is never easy, but there’s never been a 4 a.m. wake-up I’ve regretted,” says photographer Chris Henry, detailing a rugged hike in the dark with a group of friends who wanted to catch the sunrise at Delicate Arch. The backdrop of golden light made the adventure in Arches National Park entirely worth the effort. Visitors come from all over the world to visit Delicate Arch—a massive freestanding cathedral that originated from the Entrada Sandstone formation, dating back to the Jurassic period. In a park with more than 2,000 stone arches, Delicate Arch is a widely recognized emblem of the state of Utah and one of the most famous geologic features in the world. Chris included a person in the frame with the arch to demonstrate just how colossal it is. The wind- and water-sculpted Delicate Arch rises 52 feet above a natural sandstone bowl, standing out against the multitude of horizontal planes surrounding it. This print serves as a symbol of nature’s resilience and the timeless wonder of the desert landscape.
