Behind the Shot
Shot at Teahupo’o in April 2023, Eject captures the surreal split-second when a surfer parts ways with his board and launches skyward—frozen in midair, suspended between wave and sky. The image, stripped of color, amplifies the drama and grace of that fleeting moment, turning it into something almost dreamlike.
“There’s something about this photo that feels like leaping into the unknown,” says photographer Ryan Borne. “It’s the thrill of letting go, of trusting the moment, and surrendering to whatever comes next.”
Unlike most surf images filled with clean rides and perfect lines, Eject offers a different kind of beauty—the chaos and poetry of unpredictability. “I was lucky,” he adds. “Right place, right time. It almost feels like he’s falling into the sky.”
