Behind the Shot

Sometimes the best way to experience a place is to let yourself get lost in it. Every morning at sunrise, photographer Kelsey Williamson would swim out into the ocean off the Philippines, searching for the massive sardine school before the crowds arrived. It was like entering a living, moving artwork—thousands of fish shifting shape around her, so dense you couldn’t see what lay beyond.

“I’d never been inside something like that before. It was hypnotic, almost meditative—the way the school moved and opened up around us with every dive. Hours slipped away like minutes,” Kelsey says.

Shot with a wide aperture to capture the feeling of motion, this image transforms the ocean into a vast negative space. In black and white, the photo becomes less about the water itself and more about the feeling of scale, stillness, and wonder. It’s a reminder to slow down, breathe deeply, and get lost in something bigger than yourself.
