Behind the Shot
During whale season in French Polynesia, Kelsey Williamson will spend days waiting for the perfect shot. Weighed down underwater, she spends every day watching the whales to find those few days that are “super epic”—when the whales are playful and the water is crystal clear. This was taken on one of those days.
Kelsey fully immerses herself, emotionally and physically, when she swims with the whales. “That’s why I go every day. To have days like that, you have to spend a lot of time in the water or get really lucky.”
But when the magic comes, it’s evident in her photographs. This whale was “having the best time dancing underwater,” she says. “I couldn’t believe how close he was and how much fun he was having!”
This print is a great reminder that we shouldn’t take ourselves too seriously. It’s almost impossible to think of the dancing whale without cracking a smile. We could all learn a little something from him.
